About Dr. STEVE WILSON

Dr. Steve Wilson is Chair of the Department of Music, Professor of Trombone at the University of Texas at El Paso, and recipient of the Abraham Chavez Jr. Professorship in Music.  Dr. Wilson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and holds both a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Wilson has been active nationally and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, touring and recording with The Big Bad Bones, The Continental Trombone Quartet, The Jim Widner Big Band, and most recently as a duo with tenor trombonist Richard Harris.  He has given recitals and master classes at Alice-Tully Hall at Lincoln Center with acclaimed pianist and chamber musician Bruce Adolphe, the Midwest Clinic, the Jazz Educators Network National Conference, the International Association of Jazz Educators National Conference, the International Trombone Festival in Brazil and China, the American Trombone Workshop in Washington, D.C., the International College Music Society Conference, the International Vernacular Congress, the Texas BandMasters Association Convention in San Antonio, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the Brazilian National Trombone Association, and at numerous universities across the United States. 

Dr. Wilson's article, "Bringing Out the Inner Animal: How to Get the Most Out of Your Bass Trombonist" has been published in the Texas Bandmasters Review and reprinted in the School Band and Orchestra Magazine.

Dr. Wilson is also active as a higher-ed consultant and interview coach, specializing in helping first-time applicants to college faculty positions achieve successful virtual and on-campus interviews.  

Dr. Wilson is a Shires Artist and performs on a TBGC George Curran Artist Model Bass Trombone
